We as women lead very complicated lives. Along with our career, there is also our responsibilities to our spouses, family, and friends. Our devotion to those close to us is pretty high up there on the list, along with events to attend and friendships to maintain. So often these responsibilities leave very little to no room for self-reflection.
At different points in our lives, we often wonder: Am I in the right career? Or did I choose this path for all of the wrong reasons?
You have no doubt asked yourself these questions – perhaps many times over. We tend to ask them when we are at our lowest. Whether it is during a particularly stressful day, or when we recognize that we are truly unhappy. On the flip side, there is a certain sense of ease when things are going well and when you’re headed in the right direction. Things flow without effort and hesitation.
Finding that mix between your career and your personal life is always an intricate balancing act. Ideally, the two should intertwine without much conflict, but when they don’t, it is time for a change. If you feel that you are constantly going against the grain and it’s making you miserable, it is time to re-evaluate things.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- Do I wake up happy most mornings?
- Do I surround myself with like-minded people?
- Am I setting goals, and am I reaching them?
- Am I learning something new every day?
- Am I getting regular exercise?
- Do I feel spiritually fulfilled most days?
- Is my work fulfilling?
- Am I grateful for what I do have?
If you are answering ‘NO’ to most of these questions, consider making some changes in your life to remedy that. Then, the next logical questions are…
What can I do now? What is the next step for me to change my life and be happy?
Do What Brings You Joy
We tend to naturally gravitate towards what brings us joy. But for some of us, this is not so easy. We need to actively figure out what makes us happy. Challenge yourself to do this. Take 10-15 minutes today and write down everything you can think of that brings joy to your life. Don’t be afraid to let your imagination run wild. Then each day, pick one and do it! This could be as simple as a hot cup of coffee in the morning as you look out your window at the trees and enjoying a quiet moment. If your list includes those of the more ambitious variety, set small goals to help you achieve them. Being happy does not always happen overnight.
When you are on the right path, things just seem to fall into place much more often. Of course, being on the right path does not mean things will go your way every single day, but when obstacles do arise, you dive into a problem-solving mode with vigor, knowing you can overcome
